There are a few things you can do to even things out in the future.
Uneven staining hardwood floors.
Wipe dark areas of the floor with mineral.

Floors made of maple birch and coniferous woods especially pine or fir are all very difficult to stain evenly.
So if the piece is sanded to 180 you should sand the endgrain to 220 or 320.
Wipe the floor down again with an acetone soaked cloth if you can still see uneven colors.
You can also fix uneven stains on hardwood floors by staining it.
